CEA NeuroSpin equipment upgrade: high-resolution brain imaging

The CEA's NeuroSpin platform in Saclay is one of the world's most advanced neuroimaging centers. As part of a program funded by France 2030 , the CEA announced on May 19, 2026, a major upgrade of its equipment. The 3T and 7T MRI scanners have been replaced with the latest generation models, offering improved spatial resolution and increased precision.
The platform also features a 17.2 Tesla scanner for preclinical imaging of small animals, whose electronics have been completely upgraded to increase sensitivity and reliability. The magnetoencephalography (MEG) sensors, essential for recording high-speed brain activity, have been replaced with a more sensitive technology, enabling the measurement of weaker signals and improved localization of neural sources.
To reduce environmental impact and operating costs, a helium liquefier was installed to recycle the helium used in superconducting magnets. This rare gas thus becomes a reusable resource, limiting dependence on imports.
The CEA has also developed specialized coils for studying the brains of newborns and young children. These adapted coils allow for high-resolution images with increased comfort for young patients. All of these investments should improve our understanding of neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases .
This modernization consolidates NeuroSpin 's position as an international reference in brain imaging and paves the way for interdisciplinary projects combining physics, neuroscience and artificial intelligence.
